The
deer raised its head to an unexpected sound, while the sun shone through the
fresh spring leaves. Bright colours danced in the newborn light, and everything
seemed to be completely peaceful. As long as the humans would stay out of the
forest, it was, but the sound made the deer think they had arrived at last.
This horrible sound was not heard again for a long time, and for the same long
time the deer kept silent, waiting for horrible things to happen. They did not.
The sun still shone through the leaves, the bright colours still danced, and
all forest animals wondered not if, but when something would happen now.

Days
passed, nothing happened, and nothing was heard anymore. Nevertheless the light
shone different. The newborn had seen and learned and had become an old man.
After the seventh day they knew. The human who found the innocence to kill it,
was killed by the innocent. It had climbed into a big tree, which did its best
to hold it, in spite of its horror. Innocence tried, and innocence twisted as
the twig which could not carry the human anymore. It fell too deep to survive.
